In seguito ad una inaspettata telefonata, Bree (interpretata dalla &#8220;casalinga disperata&#8221; Felicity Huffman) viene a scoprire che, da una relazione eterosessuale avuta nella sua passata vita da uomo, \u00e8 nato un figlio: lo scapestrato Toby, ora teenager, cui concede anima e corpo il Kevin Zegers de\u00a0<em>L&#8217;alba dei morti viventi<\/em>\u00a0(2004). Il ragazzo, alla ricerca di suo padre, dovr\u00e0 essere prelevato proprio da Bree in un penitenziario di New York, dove giunge in aereo. Ma lei approfitta per tenere celata la propria identit\u00e0 nel momento in cui il ragazzo la scambia per una missionaria cristiana in opera di redenzione e conversione. Inizia quindi per loro un significativo viaggio attraverso l&#8217;America, durante il quale Toby non potr\u00e0 fare a meno di sfuggire a Bree per avventurarsi alla ricerca del padre, tra droga e pornografia. E Tucker, con un cast che comprende, tra gli altri, la Elizabeth Pe\u00f1a di\u00a0<em>Allucinazione perversa<\/em>\u00a0(1990) ed il Burt Young entrato a far parte dell&#8217;immaginario collettivo grazie al personaggio Paulie della serie\u00a0<em>Rocky<\/em>, ci accompagna, tra paesaggi rurali e sonorit\u00e0 country, all&#8217;interno di una coinvolgente vicenda che affronta in maniera originale temi come l&#8217;emarginazione sociale e la diversit\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il film si fonda ovviamente sulla buona performance degli attori, sui quali primeggia la Huffman, gi\u00e0 vincitrice del Golden Globe per la miglior attrice protagonista e che, per poter interpretare il ruolo di Bree, ha affrontato un radicale processo di trasformazione fisica e psichica, supportata dallo staff tecnico-artistico e disponendo di Danea Doyle, coach che insegna ai transessuali donna a comportarsi come donne vere. Tra discorsi gay riguardanti Frodo e gli altri personaggi de\u00a0<em>Il Signore degli Anelli<\/em>\u00a0e dilatatori vaginali chiamati Keanu 1 e 2, in riferimento all&#8217;attore Reeves, non manca poi l&#8217;ironia; ma il regista, nonostante l&#8217;argomento trattato, non scade mai in volgarit\u00e0 gratuite, distaccandosi nettamente da sopravvalutati ed indigeribili prodotti dall&#8217;argomento analogo, come il recente\u00a0<em>20 centimetri<\/em>\u00a0(2005) di Ram\u00f3n Salazar. Infatti spiega: \u00abLa storia di\u00a0<em>Transamerica<\/em>\u00a0\u00e8 al contempo universale e rivoluzionaria. \u00c8 strano pensare che tutti gli esseri umani ambiscano alle stesse cose &#8211; la famiglia, l&#8217;amore, la casa &#8211; anche al di fuori del concetto di &#8220;normalit\u00e0&#8221;. Il personaggio principale di Transamerica \u00e8 transessuale, eppure il film non \u00e8 incentrato sulla transessualit\u00e0. A ben guardare, si tratta della classica storia basata sul legame genitore &#8211; figlio, strutturata come i consueti road movie americani. Ma le vite dei protagonisti sono tutt&#8217;altro che consuete. Il mio desiderio \u00e8 che\u00a0<em>Transamerica<\/em>\u00a0riesca a far entrare lo spettatore in simbiosi con Bree e Toby, due esseri umani che normalmente vengono percepiti come outsider o, peggio,
