In realt\u00e0 il capitano Jack Aubrey non \u00e8 diverso da Truman Burbank o dal Max Klein di\u00a0<em>Fearless<\/em>, n\u00e9 tantomeno da Allie Fox, l&#8217;idealista estremo di\u00a0<em>Mosquito Coast<\/em>. Ognuno di loro avrebbe potuto scambiarsi di posto e vivere in uno dei luoghi filmici frequentati dal cineasta australiano, perch\u00e9 ognuno di loro \u00e8 spinto dalla stessa ansia di conoscenza e conquista, dallo stesso desiderio di superare i propri limiti, una tensione quasi autodistruttiva che li porta per\u00f2 alla perfetta conoscenza di se stessi. Truman distrugge la sua vita perfetta nel momento stesso in cui si rende conto che c&#8217;\u00e8 qualcosa fuori, Max deve scoprire quali sono i limiti della sua immortalit\u00e0, Allie non riesce ad accettare di stare inseguendo l&#8217;impossibile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personaggi herzoghiani, tra cui non sfigurerebbero Aguirre e Fitzcarraldo, mossi da desideri pi\u00f9 che umani con l&#8217;ambizione di avvicinare il divino. Jack Aubrey \u00e8 il capitano Achab, deciso a sconfiggere l&#8217;infernale creatura figlia della modernit\u00e0, un uomo aggrappato alla tradizione e al dovere a cui si contrappone la ragione del suo amico dottore, personaggio proiettato verso il futuro e il progresso dell&#8217;umanit\u00e0. Il rapporto tra questi due uomini e le loro continue contrapposizioni sono il reale fulcro narrativo di\u00a0<em>Master and Commander<\/em>, ponendo in secondo piano tutti gli aspetti avventurosi del racconto, di cui restano invece nitidissime le connotazioni storiche e squisitamente marinaresche, impassibili anche di fronte alla vista di una terra sconosciuta come le isole Galapagos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Russell Crowe<\/strong> sembra nato per interpretare Jack Aubrey e <strong>Paul Bettany<\/strong> \u00e8 misuratissimo nei panni del dottor Maturin, il resto del cast fa ci\u00f2 che deve, membri dell&#8217;equipaggio in cui ognuno ha i suoi compiti. L&#8217;armatore \u00e8 come sempre regista raffinato e dalla tecnica sopraffina, capace di rendere epica la navigazione cos\u00ec come di non far mancare le atmosfere claustrofobiche che da sempre caratterizzano il suo cinema. <strong>Weir<\/strong> \u00e8 stato capace, in\u00a0<em>Un anno vissuto pericolosamente<\/em>, di fare dell&#8217;isola di Ceylon il set per un kammerspiel sartriano e allo stesso modo riesce a rendere l&#8217;oceano un luogo troppo piccolo per il suo eroe misterioso, dal passato oscuro e deciso ad andare oltre, poco interessato agli affetti, ma bisognoso di una famiglia che lo capisca (come il professor Keating de\u00a0<em>L&#8217;attimo fuggente<\/em>). Facilmente si potrebbe pensare a una latente omosessualit\u00e0 nei suoi personaggi, in realt\u00e0 ci troviamo di fronte a un cinema in cui l&#8217;unica cosa che conta \u00e8 il continuo inseguimento di una magnifica ossessione.
